Mokena is a village in Will County Illinois with a population approximated at 20,300. The village is located 27 miles south-west of the Chicago Loop. Mokena is a name derived from a Native American language meaning "mud turtle". The village has an area of 8.89 square miles of land and 0.003 square miles of water. Students of Mokena attend Lincold-Way Central High School. In the early 1830s the McGovney and Van Horne families and others settled along the banks of Hickory Creek. In 1838 a post office was established for the growing community. By 1852, the Rock Island Railroad completed its line from Chicago through Will County. The village of Mokena prospered as a railroad stop town and it has since developed into the wonderful community that it is today. Mokena became the market center for a large farming area and by the late 1870s included five general stores as well as a variety of other businesses and continues today as the bustling community that it has always been.
The Village of Mokena Property Maintenance Code requires that all properties be kept in an orderly, clean and safe condition. Weeds and grass are to be kept cut, rubbish and debris properly disposed of, vehicles and other mechanical equipment must be maintained in working order and properly stored. When you make improvements to your property, be sure you use a contractor registered by the Village to do the work. Please contact the Department of Community Development at (708) 479- 3900.

Final occupancy inspections may be scheduled once the Final Grade Survey is approved by Engineering, the signed Subdivision Disclosure is submitted, and any required deposits are paid. The name of the buyer and closing date must be provided when scheduling final occupancy inspections.
